Grange says gov’t respects World Athletics ruling, urges compassion for athletes affected
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Sport Minister Olivia Grange says the Government takes careful note of a decision by World Athletics to decline a request by 11 athletes, including four Jamaicans, to switch allegiance and represent Turkey at the international level.
The ruling was handed down on Thursday. The four Jamaicans affected are Olympic discus champion Roje Stona, Olympic shot put bronze medallist Rajindra Campbell, Olympic and World Championships long jump silver medallist Wayne Pinnock, and triple jump standout Jaydon Hibbert.

In a statement on Friday, Grange said the Government respects the ruling of World Athletics but understands the plight of the athletes impacted.
“As a Government, we are duty bound to show regard for the ruling of the international governing body for the sport of track and field. As the process of adjudication is not yet completed, we do not wish to make extensive comments at this time,” the minister said.
However, Grange appealed to Jamaicans to show compassion and consideration for the athletes.
“We know that the decision of World Athletics could have real life consequences for these athletes and by extension their families and loved ones. The Government of Jamaica will continue to support our athletes as much as possible and lobby for more to be done in this regard,” she said.
“This is a serious and sensitive issue and should not be used as an opportunity to condemn anyone. I make that appeal to the public, including users of social media. I am confident that all stakeholders will work through the present circumstances,” she added.
