Reggae Girlz vs Nigeria cancellation not due to administrative issues, says JFF
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The cancellation of a match between Jamaica’s senior women’s football team and the Super Falcons of Nigeria was due to issues with the date, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) says.
In a press release on Thursday, the JFF said, contrary to reports suggesting that the fixture was cancelled due to “administrative issues” on the part of Jamaica, the issue was that the proposed dates were outside official FIFA Women’s international window.
Noting that the organisers of the Unity Cup had extended an invitation to the Regga Girlz to participate on May 27, 28, or 30, as part of the launch of activities for Unity Cup 2026 in the United Kingdom (UK), the JFF said the dates fall outside of the window which runs from June 1 to June 9, 2026.
“As a result, clubs would not have been obligated under FIFA regulations to release players for international duty during the proposed period. This matter was clearly communicated to the organisers from the outset and discussions continued in good faith in the hope that a suitable arrangement could still be reached. At no point was the matter related to administrative shortcomings on the part of the Jamaica Football Federation,” the JFF noted.
Stressing that it maintains a positive relationship with both the organisers and the Nigeria Football Federation, the JFF said it remains open to exploring the possibility of arranging a fixture between both teams in the future during an approved FIFA international window.
“The Jamaica Football Federation remains committed to ensuring that all international engagements involving our national teams are conducted in accordance with FIFA regulations and in the best interest of our players and programme development,” the body said.
