BMW X1 sDrive18i: Excellent introduction

As the junior model in BMW’s X line of sport activity vehicles, the X1 is set perfectly to introduce owners into the premium lifestyle associated with the German brand. It does so by providing enough of a taste of what to expect as one moves higher through the model hierarchy.

EXTERIOR

BMW has been moving away from the Russian doll syndrome of old. Each model is no longer a scaled photocopy of each other, instead visually distinct, and yet containing enough brand design DNA for it to be obviously a BMW. The X1 reflects this.

The 2026 version is bigger and uses the new dimensions to create a more macho, squared-off shape, all while retaining familial design cues. The major changes are in the rear, with its own light signature. The M Sport package adds 18-inch wheels, and the high-gloss shadow line converts the normally shiny exterior accents to a sleek monochromatic style.

INTERIOR

Approach the X1 and the keyless entry preps the vehicle to go. Past the chunky leather steering wheel is the power-operated driver’s seat with memory function. Both front seats are more than suitable for sporty driving or for comfort on long drives.

In standard BMW fashion, the cabin is covered in quality materials to match its construction feel. The layout is ergonomic, layering in the technology behind a clean and modern look, with a few interesting touches such as the door handles.

Making use of its new size, the X1 is roomy inside and contains the size and number of storage solutions expected in an SUV. During the day, the panoramic sunroof helps to elevate the sense of space and refinement, while at night it combines with the ambient lighting to expand the same.

The X1’s tech is found in the BMW Live Cockpit plus system, a combination of two full digital displays, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch touchscreen. Both are clear and customisable enough to provide all the information drivers need.

BMW’s iDrive operates fast and smoothly, with even more connectivity via BMW Connected Plus Unlimited. This enables driver presets, active local navigation, and the BMW voice assistant to operate many of the automatic or powered convenience functions.

ON THE ROAD

It wouldn’t be a BMW if it didn’t drive well, and the X1 sDrive18i is powered by a gem of an engine. The 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder gets a power and torque boost to 156 and 170lb/ft, respectively. This is more than enough grunt to make the X1 fun. The low-end and midrange grunt works both in urban situations and on a favourite B-road. The healthy torque band allows the vehicle to make bursts for holes in traffic or fend off pesky Proboxes. On narrow lanes, the X1 can rocket from corner to corner with its quick-sifting, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Yet, when called upon, it can sip fuel.

Of course, the chassis is up to the game. The ride quality is sporty, falling on the side of comfort and composure to inspire confidence alongside the sharp steering and brakes.

The X1 has come a long way. Even at the sDrive18i trim it packs in enough technology, premium features, space, and driveability to stand on its own. However, in its sub-task, to ensure that buyers will move up the BMW chain as their finances and ambitions allow, the X1 lays down a clear path for the BMW ecosystem.

From the side, the impression of the BMW X1 is one of upright proportions and large surfaces. The extended roof edge accentuates the flowing lines of its silhouette. At its modern rear end, the L-shaped three-dimensional rear lights make a striking impression.Rory Daley
