Excitement builds ahead of JWPL semis
CHRISTINE Hudson, chairperson of Professional Women’s Football Jamaica Limited (PWFJL), said the excitement and expectation are palpable as the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) semi-finals kick off on Saturday with an exciting double-header at the JFF/Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence, UWI.
In the curtain-raiser, Arnett Gardens will take on Los Perfectos at 3:00 pm before defending champions Frazsiers Whip tackle Real Mona at 6:00 pm in a David vs Goliath showdown that is sure to get hearts pounding. The second legs will be played at the same venue on May 23 with the final set for Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on May 30.
This is the second staging of the revamped JWPL as the stakeholders continue to develop the game locally, and Hudson noted that, this year, tweaks to the format of the competition have added intrigue.
“We are expecting the semi-final match-ups to be extremely exciting, and potentially even more competitive than last year, especially since the teams will be facing each other for the first time this season following the implementation of the zonal structure,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
“There is a lot of anticipation surrounding both semi-final fixtures, but naturally, there is significant interest in the match-up between defending champions Frazsiers Whip and the returning Real Mona. What Real Mona has achieved this season has been remarkable,” Hudson pointed out.
Real Mona, under the guidance of Neo Oxford, made a return to the league for the first time since 2019 and knocked out last year’s runners-up Cavalier, with a team age average of 17 years old.
That has sparked some interest as to how far this team, made of mostly players from Merl Grove High School, can go and what they can achieve facing the Frasziers Whip juggernaut.
“The overall standard of the competition has improved this season, and the fact that a first-year club has successfully challenged for a semi-final spot is evidence of the growth and development taking place within the women’s game locally,” Hudson reiterated.
“We are encouraging football fans and supporters of women’s football to come out and experience the matches first-hand. The semi-finals will showcase some of the best female talent in the country, and the players truly deserve the support and atmosphere that comes with fans being in the stands,” she pleaded.
Meanwhile, Carlene Edwards, chairperson of the marketing and commercialisation affairs committee, echoed these sentiments, promising an engaging fan experience and first-hand exposure to high-level local women’s football.
“Fans can expect an exciting match-day atmosphere during the semi-finals, with several of our sponsors activitating on-site through entertainment, fan engagement, activities and giveaways,” said Edwards.
“We want supporters to come out not only to enjoy high-quality football, but also to be part of an overall experience that celebrates the continued growth of the women’s game in Jamaica,” added Edwards.
