Community group condemns fatal shooting of woman in Granville Square
ST JAMES, Jamaica — The Granville Peace, Justice and Resource Development Foundation has strongly condemned the fatal police shooting of a woman in Granville Square on Sunday, describing the circumstances surrounding the incident as “questionable”.
The deceased has been identified as Latoya Bulgin, affectionately known as “Buju”, a mother of two, businesswoman and resident of Gunns Drive in Granville, St James.
Reports are that Bulgin was among a group of residents protesting the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Tjey Edwards when she was shot while seated behind the steering wheel of a Toyota Voxy in the community square. She later succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at hospital.

In a statement issued late Sunday, the foundation said the latest killing has intensified the trauma already being experienced by the Granville community.
The group noted that since the start of the year, Granville has lost a four-year-old child, two teenagers, a 24-year-old man, and now Bulgin to fatal shootings.
While acknowledging a statement from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) confirming that the officer involved has been interdicted and that investigations have been launched by the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) and the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB), the foundation called for all officers directly involved in the operation to be removed from front-line duties pending the outcome of the investigations.
According to the foundation, Granville has in recent years recorded a notable decline in murders and shootings, with residents working toward peace, healing and sustainable community development after years of violence and gang conflict.
“We therefore ask: what could have emboldened officers to act in a manner that now threatens to torment the fragile peace and harmony of a community seeking a new path?” the foundation questioned.
“Only a transparent, independent and credible investigation can restore confidence. The family of Latoya Bulgin deserves answers. Granville deserves answers. Jamaica deserves answers,” it added.
