Jamaicans register wins at NJCAA Champs

A number of Jamaicans were among the winners at last weekend’s National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico.

 Shaquane Gordon of Odessa College, Shadane Smith and Jayval Wright of Hinds Community College and Aaron McKenzie of New Mexico Junior College were among the winners at the three-day championships.

Shadane Smith led a Jamaican clean sweep of the top three places in the men’s 400m hurdles, winning in a personal best 50.19 seconds, beating defending champion Richard Hall of Central Arizona, who ran 50.42 seconds, with Barrain Smith of Odessa third in 51.23 seconds.

Former ISSA Champs and Carifta Games gold medallist, Shaquane Gordon, ran a wind-aided 13.04 seconds (4.1m/s) to win the 110m hurdles, with Shevon Depass of Western Texas placing third in 13.56 seconds.

Wright of Hinds CC ran a wind-aided 19.91 seconds (4.8m/s) to win the men’s 200m and was second in the men’s 100m in 9.96 seconds (4.2m/s), Hector Benjamin of Indian Hills was sixth in 10.09 seconds and Raheem Pinnock of Hinds was seventh in 10.16 seconds.

Alexia Walker of Barton County College won the women’s heptathlon with 5,200 points, while Osmond Holt of Iowa Central was fourth in the Men’s Decathlon with 6263 points.

Asharria Ulett of Barton County won the 100m hurdles in a wind-aided 12.89 seconds (6.8m/s) ahead of Daynea Colstock of Western Texas 13.10 seconds.

Colstock was also fourth in the 400m hurdles in 1:00.80 seconds.

Deijanae Bruce of Odessa College won the women’s triple jump with a wind-aided 13.13m (2.8m/s), with Celine Riddle of Barton third with 12.92m (3.3m/s).

Riddle, who won the long jump last year, was second with a personal best 6.29m (1.7m/) behind Ishna James of Odessa, who jumped 6.32m (0.9m/s).

McKenzie of New Mexico cleared 2.12m to win the men’s high jump, beating Chavez Penn of Barton County, who cleared 2.07m.

Cindy Rose of Indian Hills finished second in the women’s 800m with 2:13.93 seconds, just ahead of Terrica Clarke of Butler CC, who ran 2:15.43 seconds.

Kahdijah Bailey of Iowa Western was second in the women’s high jump with 1.64m, the same height cleared by Bruce, who was third. Rasheda Samuels of Iowa Western was fourth, and Jahmeka Brown of Barton County was sixth.

Shamoyea Morris of Barton County was second in the women’s discus throw with 49.82m, her twin sister Shamoye was fourth with 45.46m, Carla Kay Brown of Coffeyville finished fifth with 43.94m and Natassia Burrell of Cloud County was sixth with 43.68m.

Raheim Scott of New Mexico Junior College was third in the men’s 400m with 46.47 seconds, and Natassia Burrell of Cloud County was third in the women’s javelin throw with 45.78m.

Caneilia Hope of Hinds CC placed fourth in the women’s 100m with a wind-aided 11.27 seconds (6.0m/s), Mickayla Gardner of Central Arizona was fifth with 11.28 seconds, and Alliah Baker of Western  Texas was sixth with 11.32 seconds.
