Chasing the special one
Owner Shauna-Kay Hinds is breaking ground in a male-dominated sport, one race and one horse at a time
Horse racing is a male-dominated sport, but a few women are constantly making waves in the industry. One such woman carving out her name is owner Shauna-Kay Hinds of O&S Racers.
On Saturday, May 16, 2026, Hinds was all smiles after Bob The Builder won the second race of the day, a Restricted Allowance III contest for native-bred four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of four) and imported four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) over 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m) at Caymanas Park.
Ridden by two-time defending champion jockey Raddesh Roman, Bob The Builder defeated Star Quest (Robert Halledeen) and Thousand Treasures (Dane Dawkins) by three-parts of a length in a time of 1:33.4 (24.1 x 47.1 x 1:12.2).
For Hinds, the victory was more than just another trip to the winner’s enclosure. It was justification, validation, and another step toward a bigger goal.
“I am very elated,” Hinds said moments after the race.
“I think there’s some justification in this win in that we had a race earlier and I was really looking forward to him beating certain horses in that race and he met up back with them this time and he did put down a show and I am happy for that,” she told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Hinds’ journey into ownership wasn’t accidental. Racing has been in her life for more than two decades through her husband, Oneil, who is also an owner.
“Well, my husband has been in horse racing for over 25 years and, you know, he loves it and naturally I became a part of it as well,” she explained.
“It was probably a few years ago that I decided that I wanted my own owner syndicate and so that’s how I got involved,” she added.
What started as participation became passion.
“I love the horses, it’s a joy to visit them at the stables, and being a part of the preparation and everything. I really loved it, this is just icing on the cake,” Hinds stated.
Like every owner, Hinds has experienced the full arc of the game. She speaks with pride about Bob The Builder’s rise, but it’s Incredible Jo who remains her standout.
“It has been so much from him [Bob The Builder] coming up but since me owning the horses, I think
Incredible Jo was one of the biggest horses and so sad that he passed,” she said.
“We had high hopes for him but unfortunately it is all a part of the game but I think he was one of the best horses we had,” she further said.
Those highs and lows haven’t dimmed her ambition. Right now, O&S Racers sit third in the owners’ championship, winning eight races from five winning horses and had earned $5,300,300 in Stakes.
Carlton Watson leads with 10 races won from nine winning horses with $11,963,457 in Stakes earning ahead of Oakridge Farms with seven races won from five winning horses and $6,472,450 in Stakes earned.
“I want to be a champion owner, definitely. Right now I am third in the owners’ championship, you know, we don’t have the materials to say alright we are the champion owner this year but eventually we will get there one day,” Hinds said.
For her, the path forward is patient and deliberate. In a sport where the right horse can change everything, she knows waiting is part of the process.
“We are taking it one day at a time. Sometimes it is not just getting a horse, but it is getting that special one and so we are looking for that special one,” she noted.
