Clampdown on roadside garages in Trelawny
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — The Trelawny Municipal Corporation (TMC) has ramped up its crackdown on garage operators who line roadways with vehicles being repaired with mayor of Falmouth C Junior Gager threatening that vehicles could be removed by the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).
The mayor pointed to a garage operator on Foreshore Road in Falmouth who has been the source of repeated complaints about vehicles lining both sides of the thoroughfare.
“We have seen what is happening. We have served the owner operating the garage. I think this is his second notice,” Gager said.
The mayor noted, however, that the operator has started to comply and one side of the roadway has since been cleared. He said the municipal corporation has been closely monitoring the area to ensure the problem does not recur.
“We have asked the superintendent [of works] to monitor it. Up to this morning he was there making sure, because if it isn’t done we will have to take action in our hands,” he added.
According to Gager, the build-up of vehicles along Foreshore Road has become both a nuisance and an eyesore, particularly because the location serves as one of the main entrances to the historic town.
“You first come upon this big welcome sign saying ‘Welcome to Falmouth’, but after you leave there, coming through on Foreshore Road, you would now come upon these vehicles,” he noted.
He said residents and business operators have repeatedly complained of the lack of parking that has resulted. The plan is to continue serving notices to those creating the problem.
“I would say to everybody storing vehicles on the road, ‘Look out’ because the municipal corporation is coming. We will be serving notices. This can’t happen, and if you don’t try to comply, we will be coming with the trucks from NSWMA and we are going to take them up and place them in the dump site,” he warned.
Gager stressed that the municipality has a responsibility to keep roadways safe for motorists and pedestrians “because sometimes you have to swing around somebody’s vehicle and suddenly come upon oncoming traffic, and it causes accidents”.
His warning comes on the heels of a recent TMC operation in the gated community of Florence Hall, where notices were also served on property owners for building breaches. There was also a notice served on one person who had several old motor vehicles parked on his premises.
Gager said the municipality will be issuing a second notice in that matter and has instructed that the property be cleaned and properly maintained.
