York, Kings eye JFF Championship spots
At least two of the four qualifiers for next season’s Jamaica Football Federation Championships could be decided in today’s return-round games in the qualifying series, on Wednesday.
The winners of the four groups will secure places in next season’s JFC, the second tier of club football in Jamaica.
York United of St Thomas could qualify from Group A with a win over bottom-placed Brown’s Town, while Kings Football Academy of St Ann need only a draw against Axum of St Mary to advance as they lead the group on goal difference, with both teams on four points.
Cross United of Clarendon must beat Vineyard of St Elizabeth to stay in contention in Group C, while Coopers Pen of Trelawny could book their place with a win over Faulkland United if Lucea fail to beat Russia.
York United lead Group A with five points, one more than Cedar Grove, and victory over Brown’s Town, who have one point, would secure qualification.
Cedar Grove’s only point came against York United in the first round, but York responded with a 2-0 win on Sunday behind two goals from Daviane Spaulding.
Kings Football Academy lead Group B on goal difference and need only a point against Axum after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first round. Axum, meanwhile, must win to return to the Championships.
Cross United, in second place in Group C, must beat winless Vineyard to keep their hopes alive. Otherwise, Mile Gully of Manchester would move closer to qualification with a game in hand.
Mile Gully lead the group with nine points after winning all three games, including Sunday’s 3-2 victory over Vineyard. Vineyard erased a two-goal deficit to level at 2-2 before Jaydon Campbell completed his brace in the 83rd minute to give Mile Gully the win.
Coopers Pen are the surprise leaders in Group D after winning their last three games following an opening-round loss. They will seek to confirm that their first-round victory over Faulkland was no upset when the teams meet in Trelawny today.
A win would make Coopers Pen the third Trelawny club in the championships, joining Falmouth United and Duncans.
Faulkland are coming off an 8-0 win over Russia on Sunday and will be looking to avenge their earlier loss. Victory would move them level at the top of the group.
Coopers Pen lead with nine points, two more than Faulkland and Lucea, who host Russia today.
