Music producer freed of rape charges
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A 40-year-old music producer has been found not guilty of rape in connection with allegations dating back to 2020.
The accused, Eli Goodall, was acquitted after the trial judge upheld a no-case submission made by his attorneys, King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie and Patrice Riley.
The attorneys argued that the complainant was not a witness of truth based on the evidence elicited during cross-examination, in which it was unearthed that the complainant provided information to the court that was not consistent with her report to the police.
The young woman asserted that after being viciously raped by the accused, she accepted food offered by him.
When pressed further, she also admitted that within 15 minutes of leaving the accused man’s room, where she claimed to have been raped, she sent him a message on his phone asking him about a lighter she had left in his room with a request for him to take it to her room.
The young woman could not offer any explanation for the various inconsistencies.
She also admitted under cross-examination that whilst her friends were on the premises where the rape was said to have been committed, she did not tell any of them because she did not want any harm to come to the accused.
Goodall had maintained that he did not rape her, and they had a sexual relationship, which had been discovered by her boyfriend.
The matter was heard for five days in the Supreme Court.
