Demisha Roswell makes Diamond League debut in Paris
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Newly-crowned national 100m hurdles champion Demisha Roswell will make her Diamond League debut on Sunday when she lines up at the Meeting de Paris, the eighth stop on the global series.
The event will go ahead despite calls for its cancellation along with other sporting competitions due to an ongoing heatwave in Paris.
The Prefecture de Police had asked organisers of several scheduled events, including the athletics competition, to cancel due to the ongoing “red alert” measures implemented in response to record-breaking temperatures.
Reports are that the meet would go ahead in an “adapted format” despite an “exceptional heatwave” after organisers confirmed they have reached an agreement with the city’s police.
It was also reported that only events involving professional athletes will be staged, while the schedule has been adjusted, including a delayed gate opening time, alongside other steps to protect athletes, staff and spectators.
Roswell, who is ranked fourth in the world after winning the JAAA national championships at the national stadium last Sunday, is one of four Jamaicans who are listed to compete.
Megan Simmonds is also slated to run the 100m hurdles which will be contested over two rounds, another first time national champion Stacey Ann Williams, fresh from a personal best 49.48 seconds in Croatia on Thursday, will run the 400m while Danniel Thomas-Dodd will line up in the women’s shot put.
Roswell surprised the field at the Jamaican championships with her 12.40 seconds run, joint fifth best ever by a Jamaican. She will hope her form holds when she goes up against a quality field.
In addition to Simmonds who has had a good season so far, world record holder and world number two ranked Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, Devynne Charlton who broke the Bahamas national record on at least two occasions this season; former world record holder Kendra Harrison of the USA and her compatriot Grace Stark; as well as World Champion Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland; Nadine Visser of the Netherlands; and Cyrena Samba-Mayela of France are all looking for a spot in the final.
Williams is on a tear, winning her first national senior championships a week ago and then running her personal best to be seventh best all time among Jamaicans, passing Grace Jackson and Candice McLeod in the process.
She will be going up against World and Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic and Lurdes Gloria Manuel, the national record holder of Czechia.
Thomas-Dodd will line up against the very best in the world when she takes on world leader Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands, Commonwealth Games champion Sarah Mitton of Canada, as well as the Swedish pair of Axelina Johansson and Fanny Roos.
