Five teams chase two JFC qualifying spots
TRELAWNY, Jamaica — The other two teams that will qualify for next season’s Jamaica Football Championships will be decided on today’s final day of the qualifying competition.
Five teams – two in Group C: Mile Gully and Cross United – and three in Group D: Lucea FC, Coopers Pen and Faulkland United are still in the race to join York SC from Group A and Kings Football Academy in Group B who booked their places last Wednesday.
Mile Gully who are on a perfect nine points from three games, will only need a draw to secure their spot against Cross United who must win the game by a two-goal margin if they are to advance.
Mile Gully were awarded points from their first round game against Cross United who are coming off a big 6-1 win over eliminated Vineyard FC on Wednesday.
Rwanie Rampasaul who leads the qualifying series with four goals will hope to lead Cross United to an upset win while Mile Gully will hope Jaydon Chambers will be able to get them over the line.
Three of the four teams in Group D are still in the race from a mathematical standpoint, but second place Coopers Pen will start favorites as they face winless Russia at home at the Trelawny Multipurpose stadium.
Lucea FC and Coopers Pen are on 10 points each, separated by goal-difference, two more than Faulkland United who will be hoping for a miracle.
Coopers Pen who are undefeated in their last four games will be confident as they host a Russia FC team that has conceded 19 goals in their last two games and will be going through the motion.
Lucea, who led for the first half of the competition can also advance, with a win if Coopers Pen fail to win, while the Cedar Grove Estate vs Brown’s Town game in Group A will be of academic interest only.
