Private motor vehicle drivers and their passengers, drive-up fatal crash statistics
Of the 137 people killed in 123 fatal traffic crashes in Jamaica since the start of the year, 56 or 40 per cent were drivers of private motor vehicles and their passengers.
According to the latest daily crash statistics released on June 26 by the Island Traffic Authority (ITA), both fatalities and fatal crashes are down 24 per cent when compared with the similar period in 2025.
Motorcyclists have so far accounted for 35 or 26 per cent of the fatalities since the start of the year while pedestrians accounted for 33 deaths or 24 per cent.
Drivers of private motor vehicles come next with 32 deaths or 23 per cent, while 24 of their passengers have also been killed, accounting for 18 per cent of fatalities since the start of the year.
While often chastised for their reckless and dangerous driving habits, of note is that the ITA is reporting a single fatality among drivers of public passenger vehicles (PPV) and one death among PPV passengers.
Vulnerable road users combined – pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists and pillion passengers – account for 55 per cent of fatalities since the start of the year. Overall, passengers account for 22 per cent of fatalities since January 1.
