Mile Gully, Cooper’s Pen complete JFC qualification
Mile Gully of Manchester and Cooper’s Pen of Trelawny qualified for next season’s Jamaica Football Championships after scoring contrasting wins on Sunday.
Mile Gully came from behind to beat Cross United 2-1 in their Group C decider at the Mile Gully Community Centre, while Coopers Pen topped Group D after being awarded the points when Russia failed to show up.
They joined York of St Thomas and King Football Academy of St Ann, who booked their places earlier last week.
King Football Academy coach, Veron Peterkin, told the Jamaica Observer last week that while they were a year behind schedule, they were pleased to be playing in the country’s second-tier club competition.
“Playing in this competition is very necessary as we are hoping soon to be playing in the Premier League,” Peterkin said. “This is a massive step for us.”
Peterkin said they had hoped to qualify last season but stumbled.
“We had some hiccups last season, we thought we would have qualified then, but we are there now and that is what is important. We knew that we could not miss this year,” Peterkin said.
On Sunday, Mile Gully, who only needed a draw to win the group, rallied from a goal down to book their place in the championships.
Avantae Goulbourn gave Cross United the lead in the 38th minute, but an own goal in the 72nd minute brought Mile Gully level before Demarco McLean scored in added time to secure the win.
Russia’s forfeit, after they had conceded 19 goals in their previous two games, gave Cooper’s Pen the points they needed to secure their berth and made Faulkland United’s 3-0 win over Lucea at Jarrett Park academic interest only.
