In a post on X, along with a picture of himself signing the decree, President Peña said: “Today, an entire country celebrates. It celebrates the victory of a team that represents the deepest part of our identity: the grit, the faith and the strength of people who never give up.”
The presidential decree stated that the victory transcends sport and represents a moment of national pride, adding that the Government wanted to make it possible for Paraguayans across the country to come together to celebrate the historic achievement.
Paraguay is now the second South American nation to declare a public holiday after a victory over Germany at the tournament.
Last week, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa also declared a national holiday after his country’s 2-1 win over Germany in Group E which secured its place in the knockout stage.
