Title holders Clarendon take on Denbigh in Ben Francis Cup semis
Dinthill, Glenmuir chase other final spot
DENBIGH High and Dinthill Technical, seeking their first hold on the ISSA Ben Francis Cup, are set to take on defending champions Clarendon College and Glenmuir High, respectively, in the semi-finals this afternoon at Glenmuir.
Giant killers Denbigh will face Clarendon College in the first game set to kick off at 1:45 pm, a repeat of the Ben Francis Cup semi-finals two years ago.
In the 4:00 pm encounter, seven-time champions Glenmuir High are to clash with Dinthill Technical.
The final is set for next Saturday.
Denbigh lost 0-1 to Clarendon in the semi-final of the 2024 season.
Garfield Carney, the Denbigh coach, said that while they are underdogs, they did not reach the semis to merely make up numbers.
Ashanti Mullings, Glenmuir High football coach
“We are very confident and the team is in high spirits,” Carney told the Jamaica Observer on Friday.
“We are looking forward to the game as we know we have what it takes to win.” Denbigh opened some eyes when they eliminated hosts St Elizabeth Technical in the second round.
And they proved it was no fluke last weekend when they dumped home team Munro College out of the competition.
Carney said they are aware of Clarendon College’s football style and will try to exploit them on the counter-attack.
Clarendon College are seeking a third-consecutive final berth.
They qualified for the semi-final with a tough 2-1 win over Manchester High, finishing the game with 10 players after Justin Hayles, who scored the opening goal, was sent off.
Hayles will be available for the match after serving his suspension in the midweek daCosta Cup fixture.
Coach Ashanti Mullings took over the Glenmuir High programme this season with big boots to fill, following the departure of Andrew Peart.
Mullings said it will take a team effort to get to the final.
“We have not won anything yet.
Getting to the semi-finals is one thing but we have to play and win to get to the final,” he told the Observer.
Glenmuir High have scored 34 goals, despite being held 0-0 in regulation time by Kemps Hill High, before winning the round-of-16 game on penalty kicks.
Dinthill Technical, like Glenmuir are yet to concede a goal in the competition.
Dinthill have scored 19 goals in four Ben Francis Cup games.
