Pet lovers gather for expo
PET owners came out in their numbers at the recent True Pet Expo which was held at the Kingston Polo Club at Caymanas in St Catherine.
Several services and treats awaited dogs and cats throughout the day, as exhibitors and partners rolled out the red carpet for their furry friends.
Carlene, a patron who travelled from St Elizabeth, said it was her second time attending the True Pet Expo.
“I like the overall vibe. I am a dog lover, so these events interest me. Furthermore, this is like a social event for my shih tzu. From she arrived she’s just been having a good time,” said Carlene.
Other highlights of the expo included a fashion show for dogs, and the True Pet Industry Awards, which recognised people within the pet industry.
Franz, a mix between Pomeranian and Pekingese, owned by businesswoman Keisha Myers, created quite a stir on stage during the fashion show for dogs. He emerged winner by popular vote.
Influencer Dennecia is a dog mom to Lizzie, who is a shih-Pom, a cross between a shih tzu and a Pomeranian. She was thrilled to be nominated in the Pet Influencer of the Year category.
“It means a lot to have the content I create and the love I share for pets recognised. As a content creator, I enjoy sharing authentic moments and experiences with my audience, and my dog Lizzie is such a special part of that journey. This nomination encourages me to continue using my platform to celebrate the joy of pet ownership and connect with other pet lovers,” said Hector.
The Pet Influencer award went to cat and dog mom Carla Moore, while the Compassionate Charity/Shelter Award was awarded to the Jamaica Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Outstanding Boarding House winner was Renee’s Pet Palace Resort, and Deja’s Grooming Services was voted Top Groomer.
Rapid True Value was recognised as Top Retailer while veterinarian Dr Audrie McNab of All Pets Vet Clinic won Best Veterinarian.
“It was a surprise and honour to receive the award for Best Vet this year at the True Pet Industry Awards. My team works hard and we have many four-legged clients that we love. I think knowing that the votes come from the public makes it all the more humbling,” said Dr McNab.
Tina Hamilton, senior manager, True Pet Food, organisers of the True Pet Expo, reflected on the day’s execution.
“This is an interesting time in the pet industry. Last year we were not able to execute our usual Pet Expo because of the terrible hurricane season we had. We wanted to remember the situation we all faced last year as well as celebrate the resilience of the pet community,” said Hamilton.
She added, “For years the cat owners made it known that dogs were not the only social pets in Jamaica. They wanted a space to bring their cats, and we made it happen this year. Safety was our main concern, and Main Event did a beautiful job in executing the vision for this year’s staging.
“There was a very comfy cat house for all our feline visitors. It had cat trees, bean bags and cat-sitting services for the pet parents who wanted to explore the exhibition. The expo itself showcased products and services from across the industry.
“Dr Bernadette Frankson from Paws for Physio showcased her chiropractic services with a full pool for dogs to swim in. New businesses like Pet Tag Pro, pet bakery Sprynkle Studio, and pet sitting service Cuddlr came on board. Pet Expo veterans, including Smartline, were also there. It was also a draw for many from out of town,” Hamilton said.
Among the exhibitors and partners were Edgeline Veterinary Services, which provided free veterinary checks; Cuddlr; Paws for Physio; Renee’s Palace Pet Resort; and Dejas Grooming, who provided grooming services; Negril Huts, a pet-friendly Airbnb; We Love Happy Tails; Animal Lodge Pet Shelter; Wuff Box, which showcased their subscription services; and Medical Disposable Services that had a pet and pamper station with massages and products for pets and pet owners.
