Kiwanis Club of Constant Spring launches ‘Breakfast for Brighter Futures’ to support 150 young learners
THE Kiwanis Club of Constant Spring has officially launched a new programme, Breakfast for Brighter Futures, as President Anthea Domville’s major project for the 2026–2027 Kiwanis year, pledging to help approximately 150 children at Lalyce Gray Basic School begin to their school day nourished, focused, and ready to learn.
The launch, held on October 12, 2026 in the inner-city community of Cassava Piece in St Andrew, brought together representatives of the Kiwanis movement, the school community, and the early childhood education sector in support of an initiative aimed at addressing the nutritional needs of its young learners.
The project will provide breakfast four days per week over approximately 144 school days during the year, with an estimated investment of $3.24 million.
In her address at the launch, president of the Kiwanis Club of Constant Spring Anthea Domville said as she thought of an initiative that responded to a shared need and which would be suitable as her President’s Major Project, the idea for the breakfast for young learners emerged a year ago. And she wanted it to benefit the children of the Lalyce Gray Basic School in the deprived community.
When she subsequently approached the school’s principal, Beverley Saddler, to discuss the idea, the principal revealed that she had been considering the same need just the week before. For President Domville, this was confirmation that the initiative was aligned with a genuine need within the school community.
Recalling advice from Past District Trustee Ralston to conduct a needs assessment and ensure that service projects align with the needs of their intended beneficiaries, Domville emphasised the importance of listening to the community before undertaking a project.
“By coming together to feed our youngest scholars we are removing barriers to attendance and giving every child there an equal opportunity to thrive,” Domville stated in her address.
She highlighted the importance of proper nutrition during early childhood, noting its contribution to cognitive development, learning, and lifelong success.
“Together, we are truly building a brighter future, one breakfast at a time,” she added, expressing gratitude to the partners, donors, sponsors, and community members whose support is helping to bring the initiative to life.
The launch programme reflected a collaborative approach to supporting early childhood development.
The proceedings were welcomed by Distinguished Lieutenant Governor Deborah Manning, who served as master of ceremonies. Prayer was offered by Distinguished President Desrene Ridge-Osburne, followed by remarks from Principal Saddler.
Greetings were delivered by Shelly-Ann Campbell, development officer, Region 1, Zone 5, of the Early Childhood Commission.
Students from the school’s K-Kids programme also contributed a performance highlighting the children at the heart of the initiative.
Denniston Brown, managing director of Niche Financing Ltd, delivered remarks on behalf of the sponsor. The project was officially launched by Distinguished Lieutenant Governor Rosemarie Dunn-Vaz.
The participation of education representatives, service leaders, students and corporate partners underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing the needs of Jamaica’s youngest learners.
The programme requires approximately $22,500 for each day of service and $3.24 million over the projected 144 programme days, Domville said. The Kiwanis Club of Constant Spring invited additional partners to support the programme through financial and other resources.
“Breakfast for Brighter Futures represents more than the provision of a meal. It is an investment in the well-being, educational readiness, and potential of young children and an opportunity for the wider community to contribute to a stronger foundation for their future,” the new president insisted.
The Kiwanis Club of Constant Spring is part of Kiwanis International, a global organisation of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.
