From pain to purpose: Onique Bolton’s journey of resilience and empowerment
FOR Onique Bolton, the journey to becoming a nail educator and entrepreneur was never simply about mastering a beauty technique. It was about survival, rebuilding, and finding purpose in the midst of life’s most difficult seasons.
Bolton experienced hardship and loss from an early age. Her childhood in what she described as the garrison was marked by uncertainty, frequent moves between homes, and the painful realities of losing loved ones to violence. As she watched her mother move from job to job in an effort to provide for the family, she began to understand the importance of hard work, independence and perseverance.
Those early experiences would eventually shape the woman she became. But the road to finding her footing was far from easy.
At just 16, Bolton became a mother. Shortly after welcoming her child, her mother died.
At a time when she should have been preparing for her own future, she was forced to confront the realities of motherhood, grief and financial insecurity.
Before her mother’s death, there had been plans for Bolton to resume her education and return to high school after attending the Women’s Centre, which caters to teen mothers. But that tragedy changed the course of her life.
“My life took a completely different direction. I had to learn how to survive, make difficult decisions, and take responsibility at an age when I was still trying to figure out life myself,” she told All Woman.
By 17, Bolton was working at a car wash. She was no longer simply navigating young womanhood; she was learning how to provide for her child while trying to make sense of an uncertain future.
In the years that followed, she experienced periods of instability, while trying to find direction. More losses would come, leaving her with grief as a constant companion at different stages of her life.
Yet, Bolton knew her life could become something different. She remembers walking into furniture stores, admiring the beautiful pieces on display, and picturing the kind of home she wanted to create for her family.
“I always believed there was something better ahead for me,” she said.
That belief would eventually become the foundation upon which she began building her life. Reflecting on her circumstances, Bolton realised she wanted to create a better future, but she knew that change would require her to take a chance on herself.
Returning to school was one possibility, but money was a deterrent. She needed an opportunity that would allow her to develop a marketable skill and eventually earn an income.
That was when she considered nail technology, though she had no formal background in the field. She never imagined it would become the foundation of her career, but was willing to try something new.
Bolton invested what little she had in nail training, taking a chance on a future she could not yet fully envision. And success did not come immediately.
Establishing herself in the beauty industry demanded consistency, confidence and the willingness to keep going, even when the vicissitudes of life threatened to derail her progress. As Bolton worked to build her career, she continued to experience various challenges. When life became overwhelming, she walked away from nails twice, even pursuing a different career. For a time, the weight of her circumstances made it difficult to remain focused on the business she was trying to build.
But eventually, she recognised that she could not allow setbacks to determine her future.
Turning to God for strength, Bolton decided to give nail technology another chance. This time, she committed herself fully to the process, promoted her services, distributed flyers and business cards, worked long hours, and focused on building a loyal clientèle.
She gradually established herself, and eventually, her hard work paid off, and she built a fully booked nail business.
“Sometimes strength means finding the courage to seek help and keep going,” she shared.
As Bolton’s business grew, another opportunity began to emerge. She had always enjoyed motivating and encouraging others, and her experiences as a beginner nail technician had given her a first-hand understanding of the challenges aspiring beauty professionals face. That understanding influenced her decision to begin offering one-on-one training.
For Bolton, teaching was about more than showing someone how to prepare a nail, apply products or perfect a technique. She wanted her students to understand the business side of the industry, develop confidence in their abilities, and learn how to navigate the challenges that come with entrepreneurship.
“I wanted to offer women more than just technical skills. I wanted to teach them the business side, help them build confidence, and prepare them for the challenges that come with starting something new,” she explained.
Her transition from nail technician to educator allowed her to use the lessons she had learned to help others avoid feeling alone as they pursued their own ambitions.
The woman who once struggled to find her place in the world was now standing in front of other women, helping them recognise their abilities and take steps towards a more secure future.
Bolton’s desire to reach more women eventually led to the creation of the Builder Boss Nail Tour, an initiative through which she takes nail training to different parishes. The tour represents a natural extension of her personal and professional journey, creating opportunities for other women to discover what they could achieve.
“I don’t just want someone to remember me as the woman who taught them nails. I want them to remember me as someone who inspired them to believe in themselves and take a chance on changing their lives,” she told All Woman.
Through the Builder Boss Nail Tour, Bolton has trained more than 100 students. Approximately 30 to 40 of those women are now earning from their nail skills across different parishes.
For Bolton, seeing students move from uncertainty to confidence is one of the most rewarding aspects of her work.
“When I look at some of my students, I see a younger version of myself, a woman who was once trying to find her way and build a better life,” she said.
Through nail education, she aims to give women the tools to begin earning, develop businesses and gain greater control over their financial circumstances.
“I’ve always believed that when you have a skill, you have something valuable that can create opportunities for you, even during difficult times,” she said.
“I never imagined myself standing in front of a classroom, teaching and inspiring other women, but when I look at how far I’ve come, I’m genuinely proud of myself. Life has pushed me to become a woman I never imagined I could be.”
