What every woman with PCOS should know before trying fertility supplements
Q: Hello Ms Monique, I have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and I am ready to start my fertility journey. One of my friends said that I should try supplements, gummies and drops, but I am unsure which brand to choose or which supplements to even take. Which are best for PCOS?
A: With so many fertility teas and supplements available, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. However, focusing on essential health practices can often be more effective and less stressful. Here are the fundamentals every woman with PCOS should prioritise before reaching for those supplements.
Make sleep a priority: Your hormones require adequate rest to function correctly. Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Poor sleep can disrupt hormonal balance, making it harder to conceive.
Increase your fibre intake: Aim for 30 to 35 grams of fibre per day from sources like oatmeal, chia seeds, flaxseeds, vegetables, and legumes. Fibre helps regulate blood sugar levels and supports digestive health, which is crucial for hormonal balance.
Incorporate daily walks: Even a 15-minute walk each day can benefit your insulin and cortisol levels, support liver function, and reduce stress. Walking is a simple, yet effective way to enhance overall health and fertility.
Consume healthy fats: Daily hormones are constructed from fats, so ensure you’re getting enough healthy fats in your diet. Sources like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are excellent choices.
Before turning to supplements, ensure you’re practising these essential health habits. They can make a significant difference in your fertility journey, but ensure you are doing the foundational steps. They key essential nutrients for PCOS include magnesium, B-complex, inositol and zinc, many of which you can get from a whole food balanced diet.
