Hope rising across Montego Bay as new homes initiative takes shape

As the national recovery effort following Hurricane Melissa continues, there was a remarkable demonstration of unity and compassion last week in Montego Bay as volunteers gathered to begin construction on new homes for hurricane victims.

From 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, teams worked tirelessly under the sun, committed to restoring not just shelter, but dignity and hope. The day was marked by determination, teamwork, and an unwavering spirit of service as walls began to rise, symbolising resilience and a fresh start for people whose lives were deeply impacted by the hurricane.

The initiative was supported by several NGOs and mission groups working together in one coordinated effort, including Youth With A Mission (YWAM Jamaica & Costa Rica); Operation Blessing; WhyNot International; National Baptist Convention; Mission Uprising; and BridgePoint Foundation (Jamaica & Dallas, Texas).

The atmosphere was one of encouragement and purpose, as volunteers lifted lumber, laid foundations, and contributed skilled labour with a shared mission: rebuilding lives, one home at a time.

The homeowners, visibly moved by the outpouring of support, expressed heartfelt gratitude throughout the day. Their appreciation served as a reminder that these projects go far beyond construction, they represent restoration, community, and renewed faith in the future.

Last week alone, 15 homes were built, directly supporting the broader commitment to deliver 200 new homes to families affected by Hurricane Melissa. This milestone reflects the growing momentum of the rebuilding initiative and the determination of all partners involved to ensure that no family is left behind.

These efforts will continue in the weeks ahead through ongoing collaboration with YWAM Montego Bay, under the dedicated leadership of John and Daniel Hess, along with committed partners BridgePoint Foundation, NGOs and mission teams who remain focused on expanding the reach of this recovery mission and building even more homes for those still in need.

In a release, BridgePoint Foundation extended special thanks to all volunteers, local and international, who have committed their time, energy, resources, and skills to support Jamaica’s recovery process.

As the recovery continues across western Jamaica, the work on homes completed to date stands as a shining example of what is possible when communities come together with compassion and purpose, the release stated.
