Foreign minister leads delegation to COP21 in Paris
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Arnold J Nicholson is now in Malta as head of Jamaica’s delegation to the 24th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
According to a news release from the ministry, Nicholson is expected to travel to Paris, France afterwards to lead Jamaica’s delegation to the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
It is slated to begin on November 30.
The COP21 is largely considered the last opportunity for the international community to reach agreement on measures to stem global warming. Jamaica, like other small island developing states, anticipates that the outcome will be a legally binding agreement, seeking to cap the rise in global temperature, caused by greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions, at 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.
