Wheatley promises Data Protection Bill in 3 months
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Science, Energy and Technology (SET), Dr Andrew Wheatley, says that a Data Protection Bill is now far advanced.
“Within three months this honourable House will have the opportunity to review and debate its provisions,” Wheatley told the House of Representatives today, as he made his contribution to the sectoral debate.
It is expected, under the Act, that private and public sector entities will need to implement the necessary technical and institutional support to ensure greater protection of personal data within their custody or control.
Drafting of the Bill was first announced in 2013 by then minister of State in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining (STEM), Julian Robinson. He said then that the Data Protection Act would safeguard, in general, the privacy of individuals in relation to personal data as well as regulate the collection, regulation, processing, keeping, use and disclosure of certain information in physical or electronic form.
