Prison escapee back behind bars
Western Bureau – One of the three detainees who escaped from the Falmouth police lock-up last month is back behind bars. Durant Kelly, a 28 year-old from Flankers in St James, was handed over to the Falmouth police at about 10:40 pm on Sunday by his sister, Olive Morrison, of Bounty Hall in Trelawny.
Kelly is now being held at the Clarks Town police station.
In the meantime, an investigation has been launched into the activities of the six police officers on duty at the time of the escape.
On February 17, Kelly, along with two 17 year-old Trelawny residents – Orlando Hodges of Wakefield, and Andre Morrison from Deeside – escaped from one of the station’s five cells by removing a portion of the ceiling.
Hodges and Morrison were awaiting trial on charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. Kelly was facing charges of housebreaking and larceny in Trelawny and he was also scheduled to be taken to St James to face similar charges there.
The Falmouth police reported that at around 12:10 am cops, who were on duty at the station, heard a noise coming from the divisional office, which is located above the cell which the men occupied. Lawmen forced the office door open and found that the door to the deputy superintendent’s office was open and a portion of the flooring was missing.
The cops hurried down the stairs where they discovered that three of the four inmates who were housed in one cell were missing, and there was a hole in the cell roof.
Both Falmouth Mayor Jonathan Bartley and police superintendent in charge of the parish, Jasmine Tomlinson-Brown, blamed the escape on the deplorable condition of the building.
