Austrian company brings food and wine to the local market
The company AUSTROJAM Ltd, founded in March 2008 by Austrian Martin Zsifkovics, concentrates on two operationsorganic local vegetable farming with the support of Jamaican farmers and the distribution of Retzecco sparkling wines.
In an interview with Thursday F o o d, we spoke to Zsifkovics about his company and how it will impact the local food and beverage industry. Zsifkovics explained that Jamaica holds great promise for farming and he hopes to forge relationships with the local farmers. “The Jamaican environment is offering the perfect conditions for better local and competitive production, and in the future the focus will be to increase the local vegetable production, through building relationships with local farmers.”
He has started production in areas such as St Elizabeth, Blue Mountains, Lucea, Hanover and Westmoreland, cultivating crops such as tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, mint, and basil with the assistance of local farmers, using organic farming techniques. “Organic farming produces better quality crops than crops grown using chemicals,” he continued. “You can actually taste the difference and it is also healthier for you.” He hopes that he will be able to gain more support in the future from local farmers, and to see a reduction in the amount of vegetable imports. “I hope that the organic farming will grow with the support of more local farmers and reduce the imports significantly.”
The company also concentrates on beverages and has introduced Retzecco to the local market. This delicately flavoured sparkling wine hails from the lush green vineyards of Austria and has subtle hints of strawberry and raspberry. Retzecco is perfect by itself as a cocktail, or as a complement to your favourite meal, and is available exclusively at Spaces in Winchester Business Centre. Zsifkovics said that Retzecco is the premium-quality beverage that Jamaica has been waiting for.
“Jamaicans love to drink and entertain and this quality drink is smooth and has a distinctive taste.” The wine will have its official launch at Sting later this month. Zsifkovics is happy with business so far and hopes to make a significant impact in the local business arena. “My love and hope for Jamaica will never die and I am looking forward to a bright future at the best spot in the world.”
