FORTY of Jamaica’s professional golfers and some of the island’s best amateur golfers will take to the White Witch Golf Course from today to Sunday for the second staging of the Professional Golfers Association of Jamaica’s (PGAJ) Players Championship. Tee off each day will be at 9:30 am.

Defending champion Ewan Peebles will be back to take top honours from a field that includes Jamaica’s top international professional Peter Horrobin, who is back from his first tournament on the European Senior Tour.

Some of the other professional golfers who will be in action are Spencer Edwards, a PGA professional from Half Moon who will be playing his first local event since taking up the job, as well as Dermott Warren, who has represented the country at several tournaments in the past.

Sandals head professional Dave Reid from Canada will be taking on the local senior players in that section of the event.

The top three finishers in the JGA’s National Amateur Championships have been invited to play, while Fabian Campbell will defend his title from last year’s event.

Wesley Brown, who recently returned from the US qualifiers, will be on the course as well.

The course, located along Jamaica’s golf strip — home to several high-quality, world-rated courses, the White Witch Golf Course — has been described by visiting pros as extremely challenging. The golfers will have to battle high winds and unusual pin placements during the championship.

The players will receive newly-carved Lignum Vitae trophies which were designed specifically for the event, as well as to celebrate Jamaica’s heritage.
