Deshorn Brown a pleasant surprise

Deshorn Brown had two matches in Jamaica’s failed bid to qualify for Brazil 2014, and based on the quality exhibited, there are those who may think that his addition to the squad was belated.

That’s neither here nor there in the scheme of things.

Brown, 22, is certainly one for the future.

In his second match for the Reggae Boyz on Tuesday night, the Colorado Rapids frontman forced an own goal by defender Jorge Claros to equalise against Honduras at the National Stadium.

In his debut game against the USA at Sporting Park in Kansas City last Friday evening, Brown was a revelation with his good first touch, dribbling ability and his clean shooting technique which he executes with both feet equally.

“I feel pretty good as this is my second game and I scored a goal, especially in the last game, and it gives me a lot of confidence to go back to Colorado and focus,” said the former St Elizabeth Technical High School student.

Brown, a front-runner for the US MLS Rookie of the Year title, said being called up for the Reggae Boyz was indeed a dream come true for him.

“I have been waiting for a long time for a call to the national team, but I guess it’s the right moment… I am just happy I came and tried my best to help the team as much as possible,” he said.

With a view to cementing his place in the Boyz set-up going forward, Brown is happy that he has shown enough for the coach, whoever he may be to consider the striker for selection.

“I am trying to show them that I deserve to be here like any other player and I am just working hard every day and trying to push myself…I hope what I have done in these two games will make them show me more attention,” Brown told journalists at a post-game press conference.

For his tenacity and lightning reply on Tuesday night, Deshorn Brown is the Jamaica Observer Star Player.
