Alia Atkinson medals again
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Alia Atkinson, Jamaica’s top female swimmer, Monday copped another silver medal in the 50m Breaststroke, this time on the second day of the Doha leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup as the rivalry between her and Russian Yuliya Efimova heats up.
Efimova took the gold in a time of 29.22, but Atkinson was not far behind with a time of 29.25.
On the Dubai leg of the World Cup, Jamaica’s Atkinson beat Efimova in the 100m Breaststroke and though expected to take the Breaststroke double, Efimova outswam Atkinson in the 50m distance.
Much like experiencing deja vu, the feat has been repeated in Doha as Atkinson took the gold in the 100m distance yesterday, beating Efimova into second place, while Efimova outswam Atkinson in the 50m distance today. Efimova is the world champion in both the 50m and 200m Breaststroke.
Moniek Nijhuis of the Netherlands finished third in a time of 30.40.
Atkinson had also taken a bronze medal in a time of 2.07.30 in the 200m IM, behind Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu (2:05.45) and Great Britain’s Sophie Allen (2:06.36) yesterday. She is also scheduled to compete in the 100m IM today.
