Exercise is a must with Lupus
THERE are many benefits of modern medicine when it comes on to lupus treatment, but patients must never forget the importance of traditional methods, says Dr Karel De Ceular of the Lupus Foundation of Jamaica.
“Exercise and diet… In fact, the modern medications are very expensive, out of reach for many patients. So everybody has to use what Mother Nature provided us free of charge,” noted Dr De Ceular, a consultant rheumatologist at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Dr De Ceular noted that lupus patients often have problems with certain exercises such as jogging and intensive aerobics because of pain in the joints. These should be substituted with milder options such as swimming, walking, or cycling.
“I prefer non-competitive ball games apart from the physical activity. There is an element of focus necessary to hit the ball successfully. The physical effort will increase sleep quality, while concentration will improve mood and happiness,” he said.
Patients with lupus should be on a diet of low sugar, low animal protein and high fibre. Some patients need to reduce the intake of gluten (bread, crackers, dumpling and pastry),” continued the doctor, noting that recent trials revealed that supplements such as vitamin D, omega 3 fatty acids, among others, reduce the activity of the disease.
