Youth mayor to aid in beautification of Lucea
LUCEA, Hanover — ELEVEN-year-old Rheanna Kerr, a student of the Lucea Primary School in Hanover who was last week installed as the 2014/2015 Youth Mayor of Lucea, has said she plans to establish an environmental club at her school to assist in the beautification of the Hanover parish capital.
“I want to start that club because sometimes when you look at Lucea from a high place it looks a little dull, so with more trees and a little bit more flowers…it would
look a lot better,” Kerr told the Jamaica Observer West shortly after her installation last week Thursday at the Hanover Parish Council Municipal building.
Kerr, who wants to become a paediatrician, added that she intends to hit the ground running this week with her project.
“The Environmental Club will be going around Lucea planting trees and picking up garbage and putting in place more garbage bins, because sometimes the residents throw their garbage on the ground and it gets washed into drains which attract mosquitoes which spreads the chikungunya virus,” she explained.
Kerr’s grade six teacher, Sharon Chapman, described the new Youth Mayor, as a very hard working student.
“I am elated…she is a very hard working student, very intelligent I would say, and she possesses great creative abilities,” Chapman said.
“I know that she will go out there and she will carry out her duties with alacrity, because she pays attention to details and she possesses great interpersonal skills that will be needed to interact with persons on a daily basis. She is a leader who is
always leading from the front,” Chapman added.
Young Kerr will be receiving $100,000 from the Hanover Parish Council to assist with her project, while her deputy Daniel Miller of Knockalva High will get $50,000 for his project.
Meanwhile, Mayor of Lucea, Wynter McIntosh, said this year, he will ensure that all the youth councillors undertake projects in their respective divisions.
“We want to ask each junior councillor to put on a small project in their respective school so the entire Hanover, each division, will have a project,” said McIntosh.
He said the councillor in the respective divisions will assist the junior councillors to ensure the success of their projects.
