NASSAU, Bahamas (CMC) — Bahamaian students living in Jamaica returned home late Saturday as Jamaica braced for the impact of Hurricane Matthew.

Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell said the Bahamasair flight, organised in conjunction with the Government, was successful and the students were greeted at the Lynden Pindling International airport when they landed shortly after 11:15 pm.

It was, however, not clear how many students were flown home.

On Saturday, the ministry said it informed parents of students studying in Jamaica that a Bahamasair flight would depart from the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston late Saturday.

“The Jamaican Government and the education institutions have assured The Bahamas Government that all the necessary safety precautions are in place in preparation of the hurricane for those who choose to stay. It gave details of who to contact and when to report to the airport,” a statement from the ministry said.

Mitchell said once the authorities in Jamaica give the all-clear, details on the return flight would be placed on ministry’s web page and on social media.

Mitchell added that no similar arrangements were needed for students in Cuba.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center says Hurricane conditions are expected to reach Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti today.
