Matthew’s coming puts brakes on RSPL
Today’s Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) games have been postponed due to heavy rain and wind likely with the expected arrival of Hurricane Matthew to the island, according to organisers.
Yesterday, the Professional Football Association of Jamaica (PFAJ) issued a release advising of its decision.
“The Operations Committee of the Professional Football Association of Jamaica has taken the decision to postpone all 2016-2017 RSPL Match Day 5 Games, originally scheduled for Sunday, October 2, 2016,” the statement said.
The PFAJ added that it will announce the rescheduled dates and times of those fixtures.
Up to press time yesterday, the Meteorological Service maintained hurricane watch status for Jamaica as the Category 4 system moved westward over the central Caribbean. Forecasts say it should start approaching Jamaica and Haiti today and tomorrow.
After four games into the new season, promoted Jamalco FC of Clarendon lead the 12-team standing with nine points.
Champions Montego Bay United, who are in second place, and third-placed Humble Lion FC, also have nine points each, but they both hold an inferior goal difference to Jamalco.
Last year’s beaten finalists, Portmore United are fourth with seven points.
Two powerhouses from the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association are yet to make a positive mark this season. Boys’ Town FC and Waterhouse FC are without a point and occupy 11th and 12th place, respectively.
Both teams must be hoping for a reverse in fortune post Hurricane Matthew.
