Salute to Miss Lou
Mandeville, Manchester — Renowned folklorist, educator, writer and poet, Louise Bennett-Coverley, was born in Kingston on September 7, 1919.
She died in Canada in 2006.
The work of Bennett-Coverley, affectionately called Miss Lou, is etched in the annals of history because of the instrumental role that she played in bringing recognition to Jamaica’s folk culture and dialect.
In an event dubbed ‘Salute to Miss Lou’ the Manchester branch of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission last Wednesday paid homage to the cultural icon at the Cecil Charlton Hall in Mandeville.
Performances and exhibitions were major aspects of the walk down memory lane and in preserving her legacy, as a number of the participants were students from educational institutions around Manchester.
