The open house
Desmond Newell and Ian Paul were jointly charged for simple larceny on Friday and remanded in custody for sentencing.
The court heard that on September 10 the men stole 30 pairs of male shoes, valued at roughly $800,000, from the complainant who had left her items with Newell.
The complainant, a vendor, said she left the items with Newell and when she went to retrieve them she was informed that they were gone. The complainant maintained that in addition to the shoes — which she said were Italian designer shoes — clothes, appliances and cellphones were also stolen.
“My house is a open place, Your Honour and people go through it all the time. She was to come get them over three weeks and never come and people just stole them, I guess,” reasoned Newell, who pleaded guilty.
Despite this, the court heard that he was seen wearing three pairs of the shoes on separate occasions.
When Chief Parish Judge Judith Pusey asked the men what should become of them, Paul indicated that he will pay her weekly.
“No, no I don’t have time for that, sir. You’re going to repay her $400,000 each and there’s no payment plan here,” Pusey stated.
“If you can’t pay, let’s have an arrangement to stay,” she continued.
The men will be sentenced on October 13.
