PM undergoes medical tests; assures he is not suffering from cancer
BELMOPAN, Belize (CMC) — Prime Minister Dean Barrow has confirmed that he has undergone medical tests after a lesion had been found on his colon.
Barrow, who returned here following a visit to the United States where he had gone to discuss a restructuring of the country’s bond debts, said he is “feeling basically okay” and that the doctors have assured he is not suffering from cancer.
“I had to have a CT scan done and a colonoscopy. I have a lesion on my colon, which the CT scan identified, and that’s why I had to do a colonoscopy thereafter. The tissue samples have been extracted and sent for a biopsy, but the doctor who did the colonoscopy is somebody of vast experience and he is pretty certain, from what he sees, that it is not cancer, as the CT scan had suggested it might be.
“I still have to await the results of the biopsy, but this guy has tremendous experience and so I am convinced that he is correct.
“He thinks it’s rather a colonic ulcer which is clearly treatable; it has to be managed, but that is clearly a completely different story from what had been feared after the CT scan. So, I’m feeling good and I’m feeling relieved and basically that’s what it is,” said Barrow, 65, who won a third-consecutive term in office in the 2015 General Election.
