#CariftaGames: Stona, Richards break U-20 discus records
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Roje Stona and Fiona Richards broke the Under-20 discus records and propelled Jamaica to their customary position atop the FLOW Carifta Games medal table in Curacao on Saturday.
Jamaica ended day one of the Games with 25 medals after 17 finals inclusive of 11 gold, nine silver and five bronze. Last year Jamaica won 86 medals inclusive of 42 gold; 28 silver and 16 bronze medals and they are on course for another massive medal haul.
Richards established a new record in the girl’s Under-20 discus with a throw of 54.19m. In fact, she achieved that distance twice with her second and fourth throws. She also threw 54.09 and 54.12m with her first and third throws. All four throws were over the previous record of 53.47m set in 2002 by Claudia Villeneuve while representing Martinique. Jamaica’s Gabrielle Bailey was fifth with 45.47m.
