Americans Rollins, Madurawe take ITF junior titles
AMERICANS Pierce Rollins and Niluka Madurawe won both respective Boys’ and Girls’ 18 and Under singles titles at the 2017 International Tennis Federation (ITF)/Jamaica Junior International Tournament at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Saturday.
Rollins, seeded sixth in the main draw, defeated second seed American compatriot Keenan Mayo in a hard-fought three-setter which lasted over two hours, as he had to come from a set down to win 3-6, 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker) and 6-4 in the Boys’ 18 and Under singles final.
Prior to advancing to the final, Rollins, ranked 420 on the World Junior Circuit, knocked out the 323-ranked and third seed Daniel Moreno of Mexico in three sets, which he came from a set down to defeat his opponent 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in his semi-final on Thursday.
Mayo, ranked 230, knocked out second seed Nathan Han of the USA, ranked 371 on the circuit, and won in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 in his semi-final played on Thursday.
In the Girls’ 18 and Under singles final was won by fourth-seeded Madurawe of the USA, who defeated eighth-seed Hina Inoue, also of the USA, in straight sets 7-5, 7-6 (7-3 tie-breaker)
The Boys’ 18 and Under doubles final was won easily by the hard-hitting unseeded American pair of Drew Baird and Aldan Mayo, who breezed past the Bicknell brothers Blaise of the USA and Jacob of Jamaica, seeded second in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
