PNP’s Basil Waite part of observer group for Namibia election
KINGSTON, Jamaica — People’s National Party (PNP) Deputy General Secretary Basil Waite has accepted an invitation from the Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland to be part of an observer group to the Presidential and National Assembly Elections in Namibia.
According to a statement from the PNP, the observer group will be a team of four, headed by Musa Mwenye, former attorney general of the Republic of Zambia. It will be supported by a staff team of three from the Commonwealth Secretariat Peace and Governance Directorate, led by Ms Segametsi Mothibatsela, Legal Adviser.
The group is tasked to consider the various factors impinging on the credibility of the electoral process as a whole and determine in its own judgement whether the elections have been conducted according to the standards for democratic elections to which the country has committed, the PNP said.
As an independent body, the group is to submit its report to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, who will forward it to the Government of Namibia, the Electoral Commission, and leaders of political parties, and thereafter to all Commonwealth Governments, continued the statement.
The elections are scheduled for November 27.
The group is expected to issue a public statement in Namibia following the submission of its formal report.
