National Trials: Hyde, Russell cop titles in 400m hurdles
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jaheel Hyde of Swept Track club had to dig deep to win the men’s 400m hurdle title at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) National Championships at the National Stadium on Friday.
Hyde won in 48.51 ahead of Kemar Mowatt who closed fast into second in 48.53 and Shawn Rowe, who was third in 49.66 but below the World Championship qualifying mark of 48.90.
Meanwhile, 2018 Commonwealth Games champion Jenieve Russell, sporting bright green hair, captured the women’s 400m hurdles in 53.63 ahead of Shiann Salmon of Adidas in 53.82. Rushell Clayton of Elite Performance was third in 54.20.
Race favourite and third ranked in the world, Andrenette Knight was leading until hitting a hurdle and crashed out.
Camperdown High’s Roshawn Clarke won the boys’ 400m hurdles impressively in 49.39 and was well clear of Kingston College’s Antonio Forbes who closed late in 51.40. Jahmani Smith of Excelsior High was third in 51.42.
In the girls’ 400m hurdles, Hydel High’s Oneika McAnnuff won in 58.16. Safia Hinds of St Jago was second in 58.23. Alliah Baker of Hydel High was third in 58.96.
