Asafa covers travel expense, donates shoes to Camperdown netballers
A heart-warming moment at a recent Jamaica Sunshine Girls netball match led to a generous act of support from Jamaica’s former sprint star Asafa Powell.
A Camperdown High School student had approached Powell seeking assistance for her participation in the 2025 Florida Netball Classic, set for April 19-20.
Moved by the request, Powell immediately stepped up. He donated $450,000 to cover travel expenses for three netballers — Mahalia Mills, Lasana Cooper, and Rihanna Lewis — ensuring they have the chance to compete on the international stage. In addition to the financial support the players also received brand-new sneakers, courtesy of Powell’s apparel and footwear sponsor, Puma.
The donation was made possible through Sagicor Foundation, with the official cheque handover taking place on Friday.
Troy Yorke, Camperdown’s team manager and assistant bursar, expressed his gratitude.
“This means so much to us. These girls love netball, and Asafa’s generosity will allow them to compete. His support not only gets them to Florida but also inspires them to keep pushing for excellence.”
East Kingston-based Camperdown High School has been a regular competitor at the Florida Netball Classics for over a decade, securing the Under-19 title in 2015. Powell, a firm believer in youth and sports development, reflected on the reason for making the donation.
“I was raised to be a people person, and I’m blessed to be in a position where I can give back. As an athlete I know how hard it is to reach the top, so seeing the smiles on their faces and knowing they have this opportunity makes me just as happy.”
Powell’s contribution further cements his legacy — not just as a global track and field icon but as a dedicated supporter of Jamaicans in sports.
