ON THE HUNT
Jackson targets consecutive Diamond League wins in China
Fresh off her win at last weekend’s opening Wanda Diamond League meet in Shanghai/Keqiao, two-time World Athletics Championships 200m gold medalist Shericka Jackson will be going after back-to-back wins.
Jackson, who clocked 22.07 seconds (0.3m/s) last week, is down to compete in the Diamond League meet at Egret stadium in Xiamen, also in China, this morning (Jamaica time).
She will be looking to avenge her loss to American Anavia Battle in Xiamen last season when she opened her Diamond League account.
Jackson, who battled injuries for the past two years, looked in great form last week after arriving in China two days prior. After a full week there, it is expected she will improve on her performance.
She will be up against nearly the same field from last week, with Battle, who finished third last week, trying to defend her crown.
Shaunae Miller-Uibo of The Bahamas, who was second in the league opener, is also down to compete, as well as Americans Jenna Prandini and Sha’Carri Richardson.
Nine Jamaicans, most of whom competed in Shanghai/Keqiao, are scheduled to feature again. The list includes sprint hurdlers Ackera Nugent, Megan Simmonds, and Danielle Williams in the 100m race; Orlando Bennett in the 110m hurdles; and Lamara Distin in the women’s high jump. National men’s shot put record holder Rajindra Campbell and long jumper Wayne Pinnock, both of whom had their application to switch allegiance to Turkey rejected by World Athletics, are also down to compete.
The 100m hurdles has one of the best fields on the schedule with well-decorated athletes, featuring champions from the four most recent global championships.
Olympic Games champion Masai Russell of the United States won last week in a race that saw Williams among two athletes who failed to complete the race. It is expected Williams will seek to make amends.
Olympic medallist Simmonds was the best-placed Jamaican last week when she finished in fourth place, trailed by Nugent in sixth. They will be going up against World Athletics Championships winner Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland, World Indoor champion Devynne Charlton, who set the Bahamian record last week, and world record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria.
Bennett, a medallist at the 2025 World Championships, will hope to improve on his fourth place and season’s best 13.20 last week. He is to go up against world leader Rachid Muratake of Japan and the American pair of Jamal Britt and Cordell Tinch, who finished first and second, respectively, a week ago.
Distin is to make her first appearance outdoor when she lines up in the high jump. The event is to include Australia’s Eleanor Patterson, Charity Hufnagel of the United States, and Yulia Levchenko of Ukraine.
National champion Tajay Gayle and Pinnock had the same distance of 7.93m in Shanghai/Keqiao. Both will hope to improve when they line up against Italy’s Mattia Furlani, Australia’s Liam Adcock, China’s Mingkun Zhang, and World Championships and Olympic gold medal winner Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece.
