SHOWDOWN!
Cavalier, Portmore clash in JPL final
THE reigning kings will face an old dynasty desperate to return to the throne room of top flight Jamaican football when two-time defending champions Cavalier take on Portmore United — a club quite accustomed to the grand stage that the National Stadium will present in their 8:00 pm kick-off in the Jamaica Premier League final.
In a true demonstration of championship mettl, both teams — unfancied in the build-up — overcame first-leg semi-final deficits to book their places in the title match as well as secure the bonus of qualifying for the Concacaf Caribbean Cup.
The clash pits Portmore United — the most successful team in the land with seven titles — against Cavalier, a historic club that has carried the standard for Jamaica in recent years, with Sunday’s contest being their fifth appearance in the final in six years, having won three of the last four to add to their other title success in the 1980-81 campaign.
Montego Bay United and Mt Pleasant FA, the Concacaf Caribbean Cup holders, will play off for third place in the curtain-raiser at 5:00 pm, when a place in the Caribbean Football Union’s Club Shield competition will be up for grabs.
Montego Bay United gave up a 1-0 lead after the first leg to lose 2-0 to Cavalier SC on Wednesday while Mt Pleasant FA’s 1-0 lead was overhauled by an assertive Portmore United who won 4-2 on the night, both ties being decided after extra time.
Cavalier have become fixtures in the final – this being their fourth-straight trip to the big match — but on so many occasions this season they could have being eliminated after limping into the play-offs following a less-than-convincing regular season campaign.
An all out attacking game should not be expected as the teams have managed just one goal in four of their last five meetings in the JPL, the outlier being a 4-2 win for Portmore who have won two of three meetings this season.
Portmore, who started life as Hazard United of Clarendon, will be going after an eighth title and first since back-to-back wins in 2017-18 and 2018-19. Their last title was the Lynk Cup in 2023 when they beat Cavalier in the final.
After losing a number of their best players at the end of last season Cavalier failed to get past the first round of the Concacaf competition, surrendering their crown and struggling to stay in the top six, and only qualifying for the play-offs with a hard-fought, come-from-behind 2-1 win over Harbour View on the final day of the regular season.
They were on the brink of elimination in the quarter-finals, trailing Waterhouse 0-2 after just seven minutes in the first leg, but rallied to earn a 2-2 draw then won the return leg 2-0.
An own goal was the difference against Montego Bay United in their first leg but they, once again, found a way back to win the return leg 2-0 despite being pinned back in their own half for most of the game.
Portmore United showed off another side of their game on Wednesday with an uncharacteristic attacking formation, taking the game to Mt Pleasant FA who had taken the first-leg game and were on a four-game winning run.
Portmore had drawn 15 of their 39 games during the regular season and will hope to be able to replicate Wednesday’s performance during which they will look to Tarick Ximines, Peter McGregor, Marques Reid, and Tedj Bryan to deliver the goods.
Teenager Kimarly Scott scored both goals for Cavalier SC on Wednesday but they will hope top scorer Christopher Ainsworth, with 11 goals — the only player on either team with more than six — will step up and lead them.
Meanwhile, Mt Pleasant and MBU will hope they can shake off their disappointments and grab the spot in the CFU tournament, with the St Ann-based team appearing to have more to lose as this will be their only chance to defend their Concacaf title.
They had contested the last three finals, losing twice on penalty kicks but had finished the season strong with four straight wins, including beating Montego Bay United 2-1 on the final day to clinch the top spot.
Montego Bay have had to scrap for goals since the departure of Jourdaine Fletcher to Vietnam — and he is still the team’s top scorer.
Deonjay Brown, Richardo Ramsey, and the veteran Brian Brown had stepped up and they will need to be at their best today at both ends of the pitch if they are to end the season on a high.
