Man accused of beating, urinating on his wife
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A man accused of beating and urinating on his wife after she posted their wedding photos on his Instagram page is now behind bars.
Devin McHugan of Bamboo, St Ann, had his bail in another matter revoked when he appeared in the St James Parish Court to answer the fresh charge of unlawful wounding involving his wife.
The woman, who told the court she still loves her husband and was trying to work on their marriage, travelled from the United States to Jamaica to see him. In court Wednesday she appeared emotional as details emerged of the alleged assault.
The incident reportedly occurred at a short-term-rental property in Runaway Bay, St Ann, about 7:30 am on May 27. According to allegations outlined before the court, the defendant became infuriated after the complainant posted their wedding photos online. He allegedly beat her, tried to strangle her, urinated on her, and spat in her face before throwing a phone at her, causing a wound. It is further alleged that he took the car keys to prevent her from leaving the property.
The court heard that about 11:30 am another altercation occurred at the same location before McHugan attempted to take the complainant to the airport in Montego Bay, St James, where she had a scheduled flight.
However, during the journey, yet another altercation reportedly erupted in Discovery Bay. The court was told that, afraid McHugan would drive the vehicle off the road and kill either her or both of them, the woman got out and passers-by took her to the airport, where she made a report to the police.
McHugan was later arrested at the airport’s bus depot and subsequently charged.
Under caution, he reportedly said, “Officer, a mi wife. You don’t know the kind of woman she is.”
He was later granted station bail.
As she professed her love and commitment to the marriage during Wednesday’s court proceedings, the complainant said she travelled to Jamaica at her own expense specifically to see her husband, and had repeatedly encouraged him to seek therapy because she did not know what might happen next.
Stressing that she was not offering relationship advice, Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton urged the complainant to determine what she is willing to accept from her husband and to consider whether she wants to continue the relationship at the expense of her physical and mental health.
“If something happens more than once, twice, thrice, or four times and you don’t see any change apart from it getting worse, you are an adult and you should know whether or not your love for this man is worth it,” said Fairclough-Hylton.
After learning that McHugan allegedly committed the offence while on bail in St Ann for another matter, the judge revoked his bail, remanded him in custody until July 2, and transferred the unlawful wounding case to the St Ann Parish Court. The St James Parish Court, she said, has no jurisdiction over the matter as it occurred in the other parish.
