MONTEGO BAY, St James — Prominent Montego Bay attorney-at-law Clayton Morgan is now the interim chairman of the People’s National Party (PNP) executive committee for the North West St James constituency.

He was elected at this week’s PNP constituency conference to replace Henry McCurdy Snr who is stepping aside to pursue studies at the Norman Manley Law School in Kingston.

Morgan, who is also the PNP’s chief fund-raiser and legal representative for Region Six, is the son of the late Rev Dr C A Morgan, the PNP’s first parish councillor from the Welcome Hall Division and Member of Parliament for South Eastern St James.

Morgan has vowed to rebuild the constituency organisation with the objective of reclaiming the seat now held by the Jamaica Labour Party’s Dr Horace Chang.

He said the search for a suitable candidate to replace McCurdy was already underway.

“I am really an interim caretaker. I am now searching for a strong candidate to contest future elections. That is my objective,” Morgan told the Jamaica Observer.

He indicated that he had no interest at this time to run for a parliamentary seat.

Dr Chang first won the North West St James seat in 2002, beating the PNP’s Gordon Brown, then defeated McCurdy in both 2007 and 2011 to keep a grip on the seat.

Noel Sloley Jnr was elected as vice-chairman of the constituency, Lorna Lawson and Aneita Robinson as secretary and assistant secretary, respectively, and George Hamilton as treasurer.

McCurdy Snr, councillors Anthony Henry and Stanley Harris of the Norwood and Glendevon divisions respectively, were also re-elected to the constituency executive.
