Cheung, Bramwell, Richards top Liguanea Cup pistol shooting tourney
Top shooters Kevin Cheung, Ryan Bramwell and Darrin Richards decisively won their respective divisions at the hotly contested Liguanea Cup pistol shooting competition, which was held at the Jamaica Rifle Association’s (JRA) headquarters in Kingston over the weekend.
Some 38 shooters contended in the prestigious championship which was shot over 12 stages in three divisions. In the open division, where competitors have no restrictions on the calibre of pistol or ammunition used, Cheung topped the field with 925.0188 points, ahead of David McMorris, who was second with 750.3119, and Bernard Lawrence, who scored 690.1693 to place third.
Bramwell won the standard division, which allows players to use a variety of handguns with varying capabilities, with a total of 937.2399 points, while Greg Henry scored 719.4869, and Owen Campbell tallied 708.2035 to place second and third, respectively.
For the production division, where shooters use handguns that have not been modified, Richards took top honours with 913.6657; Chris Hart was second with 802.4277, and Ryan Grala was third with 708.2035.
Veteran shooter Anthony Johnson topped the production senior’s division for competitors over 50, with Christopher Nunez finishing in second position, while Pierre Chin was third. Owen Campbell won the standard seniors’ division, where Alwin Amore was second and Patrick Evelyn was third.
The lone female competitor, Yeonie Campbell-Simpson, impressed with 602.4394 points, which put her ninth of the 21 players in the production division.
Summing up the competition, Practical Pistol Team Captain Paul Shoucair said, “We had excellent shooting in all the divisions, with particularly fierce competition in the production and standard divisions, and that led to a high standard across the board.”
Commenting on the division winners, who all entered the tournament as favourites, Shoucair said, “Kevin, Ryan and Darrin consistently put in a lot of work and like with any sport the more time you spend practising the better your results, and these guys are definitely dedicated and the wins are the rewards for that.”
