St Mary’s College launches empowerment programme for boys
St Mary’s College has launched an empowerment programme for boys to prevent them from the risk of becoming social delinquents.
The programme, called I-STREAM, is being coordinated by past student Shadah Haley-Bailey, who is a teacher at the school.
“I-STREAM is a safe space, a community that has been developed for boys to become very active in project-based learning where they’re focusing on the different disciplines — science, technology, reading, writing, arts, engineering, and mathematics,” Haley-Bailey told the Jamaica Observer at the launch on April 12, 2022.
“These are very core components to the development of our students and it’s very important that we pay attention to how they learn. We realise that boys like to be more active in the learning process,” added the teacher, who said that male underperformance is a growing concern for her.
A brochure distributed at the launch explained that STREAM is the acronym for science, technology, reading and writing, arts and mathematics.
The programme, which will include field trips, educational activities and social events, is expected to help male students master life skills, among them communication, critical thinking, and creativity “for sustainable development”.
