Teams vie for JFF Championship semi-final spots
Three semi-final spots will be on the line when the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Championships play-offs continue today with five return games across all four groups.
Six teams are vying for three semi-final places from Groups A, B and C. The winner of Group D will not be decided until the final round of games in the first round.
Former Premier League campaigners Boys’ Town and leaders Spanish Town Police are the contenders in Group A; and Progressive and Exchange United are the contenders from Group B. In Group C, a winner will be decided between the two contenders, Holland PYC and New Green.
To add to the intrigue, Spanish Town Police, who are on six points, and Progressive FC, who lead Group B with seven points, can advance without kicking a ball if the other results go their way.
Boys’ Town, who have only picked up a point in their previous two games and trail Spanish Town Police by two points, must win if they are to stay in contention.
The Kingston & St Andrew Football Association team had played out a 2-2 draw at home to Seaforth SC. The St Thomas-based team, despite only getting a point from its two games, is not completely out of contention, but must win today and then beat Spanish Town Police next weekend.
The situation is almost identical in Group B, with Axum of St Mary, who have a game in hand, must beat Exchange United or Progressive FC will claim the top spot.
Axum had forfeited the first-round meeting between the teams after failing to field enough players for their own home game.
Holland PYC need only to avoid a loss against New Green to qualify for the top four after a win and a draw in their two meetings so far,
With only two teams playing in the group, they will meet three times. The St Elizabeth-based Holland had won their first game 1-0 then drew the second 1-1.
New Green of Manchester are not out of the running, however, and can steal the spot with a win of their own.
While the winners of Group D will not be decided today, the game between joint leaders Duncans United and 12th Street — tied on 10 points each — will impact both teams’ hopes of advancing.
They played out a 2-2 result in their first meeting but 12th Street, who trail on goal-difference, will have home advantage at Llandilo Sports Complex.
Michael Kerr of 12th Street leads the goal scoring race with five goals, but six different players have scored for Duncans. Renard Cunningham have notched three, while Oshane Plummer, Garfield Stewart and Gerald Underhill have all scored two as well.
In one other game, St James champions Granville United will seek their first win of the series when they host Lucea United at the Granville Community Centre, also in Group D.
Lucea United had won the first-round game 2-1 at Watson Taylor Park.
