Lennon on rampage in Schoolgirl League
DEFENDING champions Lennon High started the second round of the ISSA/Locker Room Sports Schoolgirls football competition by recording the biggest margin of victory yesterday.
The Clarendon school defeated St James High 6-1 in a Group Two encounter, with two goals coming from National Under-17 player Shanise Bowen.
In the group’s other game, Christiana High defeated Ardenne 2-0 on a Sashawna Campbell penalty and a Shadane Reid goal.
Lennon lead the group with on goal difference over Christiana. Ardenne and St James are at the bottom without a point.
In Group One, Wolmer’s Girls’ came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with St Hugh’s, while the match between McGrath and St Jago was rained out.
In the Marescaux Road derby, National Under-20 representative Nugene Nugent gave St Hugh’s the lead from a free-kick in the 17th minute and Akeema Williams added the second in the 68th from a solo effort.
But National Under-17 midfielder Shuraffadean Thomas pulled a goal back in the 74th, heading past Miska Whyte in goal.
Then, with six minutes remaining, Whyte failed to handle Safiya Atkinson’s cross, which allowed Ashleigh Williams to steal possession and score the equaliser.
In an unfortunate incident earlier, St Hugh’s Christina Burgess broke her leg on receiving a tackle from Wolmer’s Sasheen Wilson. St Hugh’s led 2-0 at that point.
In Group Three, Tifanny Robinson and Davia Morrison scored a goal each for Excelsior, who defeated St Elizabeth Technical 2-0.
And Old Harbour High turned back Spot Valley by the same score in the other group game.
In Group Four, Tacius Golding stopped Oracabessa 4-1, with a goal each from Shantel Samson, Sherene Thomas, Shanay Watt and Akeena Martin.
The other game between Trench Town and Bridgeport ended in a 0- draw. Tacius Golding lead the group with three points, followed by Trench Town and Bridgeport with a point each.
The league will continue on Friday.
