Johnson, Pagon to brighten ATL Tennis Classic
Damion Johnson and Dwayne Pagon will take on mentorship roles when the third staging of ATL Automotive/Volkswagen Junior and Mentor Tennis Classic will serve off tomorrow (Saturday) at Liguanea Club.
Tournament director Llockett McGregor, the brainchild of the competition, said 20 teams have so far entered. Entries close today (Friday).
ATL Automotive marketing manager Judith Denton, in her usual inspirational style, described the classic as a “feel-good, giving-back doubles tournament” with tennis players on the junior circuit pairing up with mentors of across all age groups.
Tennis Jamaica secretary Leroy Brown said the classic was endorsed by the local governing body. The tournament, he noted, allowed youngsters to learn from their mature partners who could be trainers, coaches and parents.
The ATL classic, which will start at 9:00 am, is intended to provide a “positive, lasting effect on the development of young tennis players in Jamaica”.
Unique in Jamaica, it allows amateur adults, some of whom are local celebrities, corporate executives, or just parents, to partner with the island’s best juniors.
